Mauritius
Pearl of the Indian Ocean
Mauritius offers all the charms of the exotic. It is popular with sunbathers, nature lovers, swimmers, water skiers, divers, surfers, fishermen, yachtsmen, golfers, gourmets and nightlife enthusiasts.
Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 900km east of Madagascar. It consists of: The volcanic island of the same name, which covers an area of 1,865 km² with a coastline of 330km, almost completely surrounded by coral reef. The island of Rodrigues, 560km northeast of the main island, and several smaller islands. The island attracts visitors with its beaches of fine white and golden sand, clear water, green forests, craters and waterfalls, exotic birds and monkeys, and a variety of fish and coral species underwater. Plant lovers can visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, where the island's first sugar cane factory was built. In the town of Moka there are two interesting historical buildings – La Rédiut and Eureka. The Chamarel area is also unique. This natural phenomenon is of volcanic origin.
