Gateway to the fjords

The colourful Norwegian city of Bergen is Norway's second largest city and the gateway to the majestic fjords. The Hanseatic port of Bryggen gives you a taste of the local culture – check out the commercial buildings that look like movie sets. Don't breathe too deeply when visiting the outdoor fish market, a reminder of the town's role in the early days of the fish trade.

Norway's landscape is a strange mix of high mountains, endless forests, thundering waterfalls and dark fjords. It is rugged, graceful and breathtaking in its pristine purity of nature.

The steep mountains contrast sharply with the calm fjords that run inland, where the water is still and dark.  The fjords have always been the main communication links between the settlements scattered at convenient points along the coast. Waterfalls are also a very common feature of the Norwegian landscape, and there are many of them.

Activities

Tour of Bergen

After arrival and a short tour of the Hanseatic houses of Bryggen, we will have refreshments at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we will take the cable car to the Fløyen mountain, (about 320m above sea level) – the ride takes eight minutes. From the top you will have a beautiful view of the town and its surroundings on the banks of the wide Byfjord, and the mountains and forests around it. A short distance beyond the cable car station is a beautiful forest landscape with lakes and heathland.

Sea food restaurant Cornelius

Just outside the town of Bergen, you'll find one of the most exotic attractions in the entire western Norwegian archipelago. Cornelius is one of Norway's best seafood restaurants. It is situated right by the sea on a small island with a spectacular view of the fjord, the mountains and passing ships and boats.

Sea kayaks

It doesn't get any closer to the water. A unique experience – a combination of sport and nature appreciation.

Fishing

The atmosphere on a fishing barge will engulf you. On small traditional vessels you will get further away from the city and try your hand at fishing. Cast your rods, hopefully you will get lucky.

Fjord trip

You can't leave Norway without a fjord trip. A day trip will take you to the picturesque town of Flam or to the thundering waterfalls. A beautiful boat will take you to the other side of the fjord. You will also enjoy the train ride – it is said to be the most beautiful railway, very steep in places and, if the train is not in a tunnel, certainly scenic.
