An inexhaustible treasure chest

The coastline of Gran Canaria is approximately 236km long, of which 56km are beaches (32km are sandy beaches). The most attractive of these is undoubtedly Playa del Inglés, with its sand dunes that change shape every hour. These dunes, up to ten meters high, are the result of the crushing of shells of crustaceans, shells and small stones. As well as lazing on the beach, you can spend your time by being active, jogging, playing tennis, golf, fishing or sailing. The sandy coastline, clear water and constant wind create ideal conditions for windsurfing, kiting and water skiing. Gran Canaria also offers eight golf courses.

Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Canary Islands. The island is of volcanic origin. The island has a circular shape with a diameter of about 50km and a circumference of 236km (50km are beaches). The local fauna and flora are very unique, as the Canary Islands have never been connected to the mainland. The inland is mountainous and the island's highest mountain, Pico de la Nieves (1,949 m above sea level), is located there. In the south of the island, in the resort of Maspalomas, there are sand dunes along the sea – the 250-hectare Dunas de Maspalomas protected nature reserve. In the middle of this area, you feel like you are in the Sahara, with some dunes reaching heights of up to 30 meters.

Activities

Grand tour of the island

We start by heading north towards the inland. You'll visit the Canarian Museum of Handicrafts, get a close-up view of Bandama, the deepest crater on the island, and see not only the beauty of the interior but also the surroundings of the capital, Las Palmas, from high mountain vantage points. The serpentine paths take you to the highest point of the island, from where you can see the most famous monoliths. The trip will continue along the typical villages of Ayacata and San Bartolomé to the smaller palm oasis of Fataga.

Las Palmas tour

This trip is designed for lovers of historical and architectural monuments. You will travel north by bus to the capital of Gran Canaria, where you will visit not only the house of Christopher Columbus – the "Museo de Colón", the cathedral and the old historical part of the capital, but also the port, the pedestrian market zone and other attractions. The trip also includes a boat ride in the port of Puerto de la Luz.

Jeep safari

This trip is typical of all the Canary Islands. You can take an adventurous journey along the southern coast of the island and inland with an assigned driver. From Playa del Inglés you will drive through Puerto Rico, Taurito Mogán, Cercados de Epino and Soria, through almost impassable gorges and indigenous mountain villages. You'll visit places with spectacular views, such as Ayacatam and Presa de Chira, where a break is planned with the possibility of swimming. In the village of Cercados de Araña, you will have lunch with a program. The return journey takes you through Lomos de Pedro Afonso, Salobre, Tablero, Maspalomas, San Bartolomé, Fataga and Playa del Inglés.

Water sports

In Gran Canaria you will find surf centers in all the major tourist resorts. The island has 21 areas suitable for surfing and bodyboarding. The main area is in the north of the island – the Confital area (Las Palmas). In optimal conditions, the waves here can reach up to five meters. Surfers like the Pozo Izquierdo area on the east coast, Maspalomas in the south and Arguineguín in the west.
