Mountains, canyons and lots of fun in the southern Adriatic
The rediscovered Montenegro offers many attractions in the southern Adriatic. The national parks are suitable for trekking, the deep river canyon offers opportunities for first-class rafting, while you can enjoy the coastal climate and boat rides and beach visits in peace.
Montenegro is a former Yugoslav state located in south-eastern Europe on the Adriatic coast. It is bordered by Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania and Kosovo. It is a very mountainous country; the entire territory belongs to the Dinaric Mountains. The highest peaks exceed an altitude of 2500m. The north and west of the state are the most mountainous, along with a strip around the coast. Lowlands are found only around Lake Skadar.
Five national parks have been established in Montenegro: Lovcen (considered the original Montenegro), Biogradska Gora, Lake Sakadar, Durmitora Prokletije. The main tourist resorts are located by the sea, these are the towns of Budva, Kotor, Ulcinj.
Budva is an ancient town located in the central part of the Montenegrin coast. Today it is perhaps the most popular tourist resort in Montenegro. The city is one of the richest archaeological sites in Europe. During the 20th century, the remains of a Greek and Roman burial ground were discovered during various reconstruction works. Around 2,500 valuable objects were found in the uncovered graves.
By the sea, near the center of Budva, lies Stari Grad – now more or less just its walls. The origins of Stari Grad date back to the fifth century BC. In summer, there is no shortage of cultural activities, with theatre and music performances abounding and the citadel now housing an art museum and gallery. Not far from Budva is a town called Kotor, which boasts one of the most beautiful bays in the world and is undoubtedly most charming when admired from the sea.
