The beauty of Europe's Grand Canyon du Verdon

The beauty of Europe's Grand Canyon du Verdon. The area du Verdon draws mainly on the natural beauty of the canyon, the crystal-clear lake waters, the intoxicating lavender fields and of course good wine. The many uses of the Verdon River, which flows through the canyon, and the water areas are also worth mentioning.

The Grand Canyon du Verdon is one of the deepest canyons in Europe, excavated by the Verdon River, which rises from the Col d'Allos at 2 200m and is fed regularly all year round by snowmelt and rainwater. The canyon is up to 700m deep in some places and its almost vertical limestone walls are only 6m apart at their narrowest points. The canyon starts outside the town of Castelallane and stretches between the rock walls for 21km to the Lac de Ste-Croix dam. The hike along the 14km long trail takes around six hours and passes through tunnels in several places. Whole olive groves and intoxicatingly scented lavender grow on the upper edge of the canyon.
