The Burgenland Plain by bike

The Burgenland Plain by bike. Burgenland is Austria's easternmost and third smallest state. The capital is Eisenstadt. Lake Neusiedl takes up most of the northern plain, which is heavily influenced by Hungary, with many castles, chateaus and monasteries in the mountainous center and south.

The area offers plenty of opportunities to get active and enjoy the local cuisine. The advantage is the mild Pannonian climate, which allows you to take advantage of the local landscape all year round, such as cycling, hiking or even horse riding. The area has almost 2,500 kilometers of cycling routes – with a choice of difficulty levels ranging from leisurely rides to challenging mountain bike trails. A very popular one is the Cycle Trail around Lake Neusiedl, which is 138 km long

Without a doubt, a big attraction is Lake Neusiedl, which provides year-round sports activities for both individual guests and company active tours. During the summer months, it is one of the most popular sailing and surfing spots in Europe. In the cold season, the frozen area is used mainly by ice skaters, however ice sailing is also popular.

The local cuisine offers an unusual experience, with specialties made from local ingredients and farms you won't hear of anywhere else. Traditional recipes from domestic animals such as the Mangalica pig and grey cattle are on the menus of local restaurants, as are pikeperch and carp from Lake Neusiedl.

Quality wines are also a specialty of this region, for example wine rarities such as the selection of dried grapes, the famous ice wine or the fox wine Uhudler, but also table wines such as the Middle Burgenland Franconia.
